Syrian forces shell Homs neighborhood, activists say. Troop assault next?

A rebel-held neighborhood in the Syrian city of Homs was shelled Friday by Syrian troops, according to activists. Also, UN monitors entered the Syrian village where reports of a new massacre have surfaced this week.

Also, U.N. observers entered an area where a massacre was reported this week, an activist said Friday. The monitors were stopped and fired upon Thursday.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and the Local Coordination Committees had no immediate word on casualties from the shelling of the Khaldiyeh neighborhood in Homs. Amateur videos posted online showed a small white plane, apparently a drone, flying over Homs.

"Khaldiyeh is being subjected to five to 10 shells a minute in the worst shelling since the revolution began," the Observatory said in a statement Friday. "It seems they are trying to enter it today."

Homs has been one of the hardest hit regions in Syria since the uprising against Assad's regime began in March last year. The U.N. said several weeks ago that more than 9,000 people have been killed since the crisis began while activists put the number of dead at about 13,000.

Amateur videos showed missiles exploding into balls of flames in the crowded concrete jumble of homes, in cracking, thundering crashes that sent plumes of menacing, heavy gray smoke over Homs. The videos suggested the attack began at dawn, as birds chirped, roosters crowed, and the sun cast a yellow glow.

In one video, the missiles came in rapid succession, four exploding in less than a minute.

Friday's violence came two days after reports of mass killing in the nearby province of Hama, where about 80 people, including women and children, were shot or stabbed. Leith Al-Hamwy, an activist and resident of Mazraat al-Qubair told The Associated Press that a group of observers entered the area, first visiting a cemetery where some of the dead were buried, continuing to the site of the mass killing. In Geneva, International Committee of the Red Cross spokesman Hicham Hassan told reporters Friday that the humanitarian situation in Syria was worsening.

"Currently the situation is extremely tense, not only in Houla, not only in Hama, but in many, many places around the country," he said referring to the string of villages known as Houla, where more than 100 people were massacred last month. The opposition and the regime blamed each other for the Houla massacre.

Hassan cited the countryside around the northern city of Idlib, suburbs of the capital Damascus, the eastern province of Deir el-Zour and the coastal region of Latakia as those targeted in the latest attacks

In Brussels, Kristalina Georgieva, European commissioner for humanitarian aid, talked about the Syrian crisis and EU aid saying, "we're talking 1 million vulnerable people who need humanitarian assistance."

U.S. pushes for more global cooperation in space

WASHINGTON | Thu Jun 7, 2012 10:49pm EDT

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States wants more global cooperation in space including joint war games and combined operations with allies, and is pushing for data-sharing deals with France, Japan and other countries, a U.S. defense official said in an interview.

Greg Schulte, deputy assistant secretary of defense for space policy, said in an interview on Wednesday that it made sense for countries to work together in space given tight defense budgets and the increasingly congested and contested nature of space.

He said even joint ownership of satellites would strengthen U.S. national security. The Obama administration has focused heavily on cooperation with allies as part of its approach to national security, but restrictions on sharing data from U.S. government satellites have complicated joint operations in Afghanistan and Iraq with even the closest U.S. allies.

Schulte said the Pentagon had already signed agreements with 30 satellite operators and companies to expand its knowledge of what is happening in space. General Robert Kehler, commander of U.S. Strategic Command, is reaching out to other countries to sign similar deals, Schulte said.

The growing amount of space debris is also fostering cooperation in space. The U.S. Air Force is tracking 1,100 active satellites, plus 21,000 pieces of debris, about 14 percent of which stem from China destroying one of its weather satellites in 2007. Even small pieces of fast-traveling debris can damage or destroy spacecraft and the International Space Station, which is about 240 miles above Earth.

Schulte, who is leaving his post at the end of June to teach at the National Defense University, said General Kehler was also turning the U.S. Joint Space Operations Center at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, into a center that would allow participation by some U.S. allies, much like combined air operations centers.

Such centers could be used for operations such as when the U.S. military worked with Russia, France and other countries to track the re-entry of Russia's failed Mars probe, Phobos-Grunt, into the earth's atmosphere in January, Schulte said.

He said he and his staff were encouraging U.S. lawmakers to enact proposed export control changes required to allow some of the data-sharing wanted by the United States.

Until now, Washington has operated largely on its own in space, but the growing number of countries with satellite and space capabilities has changed that, Schulte said.

The United States is also working with the European Union to modify its proposed global code of conduct for space to preserve Washington's ability to defend its satellites, he said.

More than 100 participants from 40 countries met in Vienna on Tuesday to begin negotiations on the code of conduct. The next meeting is scheduled to be held in New York in October.

Cooperation was critical given actions by China, Russia, and Iran to develop weapons that could target Western satellites, Schulte said. In a recent speech, Schulte observed that Russia has talked about deploying anti-satellite weapons; Iran and Syria have jammed commercial communications satellites; and North Korea recently jammed signals from satellites.

"If you operate together you develop collective deterrence. An attack on one becomes an attack on many," Schulte said in the interview.

Last month, the United States signed a long-term partnership agreement with Canada that will give the United States access to data from a new space surveillance system Canada is building to track objects in deep space. In return, the United States will share its surveillance data with Canada, which is also one of six countries that have invested in the new Wideband Global System satellites built by Boeing Co and operated by the U.S. Air Force.

Washington wants similar agreements with France and Japan, and other countries willing to share data from surveillance satellites.

He said this spring the U.S. Air Force conducted a military space exercise with Britain, Canada, Australia and other members of NATO, the first international war game for space hosted by the United States.

"This was a real serious opportunity ... to think about how do we conduct coalition space operations in support of military operations on the ground," Schulte said.

Heart to Heart at Home: Family Fun

Think about some of your happiest childhood memories. Perhaps you recall summer camp-outs in the backyard with flashlights and board games. Maybe you remember hot days on the beach building sandcastles and lazily watching the waves for what seemed like hours. Ski trips, sledding, basketball and football games, all of these memories bond together, creating a collage of childhood memories.

Good Old-Fashioned Fun: Is There an App for That?

Now think about your children and how they spend their days. It seems the current generation often has its eyes glued to a screen. Whether we're in the car, at the doctor's office, or in the grocery store, our kids have access to mobile devices and games to keep them occupied. Is good old-fashioned fun still alive, or has it been replaced by technology?

Statistics
The statistics are a bit alarming. A 2010 study conducted by the Kaiser Family Foundation showed that school-aged kids spend about 7 1/2 hours a day in front of digital devices like televisions, computers or mobile devices. The American Academy of Pediatrics still recommends that children under age 2 have zero screen time, but even our babies are not immune to the influence of technology. Companies are rapidly developing interactive apps for babies, toddlers and preschoolers aimed at developing important academic and behavioral skills. Since the technology is relatively new, the results are still out. Is all of this technology helping or hindering our kids?

Concerns
One of the concerns associated with all of this screen time is the safety of our children's personal information. Teens, especially, are at risk of exposing too much on social networking sights, or other gaming sights asking for personal information. Congress is currently looking at ways to change Internet privacy laws to include additional parental permissions.

Parents, educators and child development experts are also concerned that too much screen time is simply not good for our kids. Howard Gardner, a professor of cognition and education at Harvard's Graduate School of Education, maintains that there is still no replacement for real-life learning.

Achieving a Balance
Maybe your preschooler has recently learned his entire alphabet from an iPad app, or perhaps your cranky toddler will only be entertained in a waiting room by playing an Elmo game on your smart phone. The key might be finding a balance.
Parents should make sure to set time limits and boundaries for their kids. Parents need to take on the responsibility of knowing exactly what their kids are doing on any technological device. Balance technology play with plenty of outdoor time, one-on-one time playing board games and talking to your kids, sports and good old-fashioned family time.

Rules for Using Electronics
It's important for parents and caregivers to define a clear set of rules for daily electronic use. Think about the times of day when you feel it's appropriate to let your child play for a designated time. Maybe after school and work when you are feeling overwhelmed with getting dinner prepared. Offer technology as an incentive for when your child completes his or her homework. Set time limits and stick to them by setting a timer. The rules will vary by family, but the importance is sticking to them. For toddlers, make sure they are directly supervised while playing any type of games.

Nannies should share their concerns about technology and childcare with families to be sure everyone is in agreement with the rules. If you are a nanny seeking a family, visit?NannyJobs.org.

(AP) ? Jeff Maggert and John Merrick shot 4-under 66 on Thursday to share the first-round lead in the St. Jude Classic, leaving U.S. Open champion Rory McIlroy two strokes back.

Maggert took advantage of teeing off in the first group with calm conditions for the first seven holes, and finished with four birdies, an eagle and two bogeys. Merrick matched his best round of the year with six birdies and two bogeys, the last on No. 18 when his tee shot went into the water to drop him back into a tie for the lead.

"Had a loose shot there on 18, but you know ... can't hit every shot perfect out there," Merrick said. "So, I was really happy with today."

S.Y. Noh, Arjun Atwal, Jeff Overton and J.J. Henry were a stroke back.

McIlroy, preparing for his U.S. Open title defense next week at The Olympic Club in San Francisco, followed at 68 in a group that included Padraig Harrington, Y.E. Yang and John Daly.

McIlroy, coming off three straight cuts worldwide, played alongside Harrington and Graeme McDowell in an all-Irish threesome. McIlroy and McDowell are from Northern Ireland, and Harrington from Ireland.

The company and extra work on his game had McIlroy pretty happy Thursday despite two bogeys.

"I felt like that was about the best round of golf I played in a while. It could have been a lot better. Middle of the fairway, 3-under par have a 9-iron into the green par 5," McIlroy said of an approach shot that hit the water next to the green on No. 3 for his first bogey. "The scoring doesn't look too good. Off to a decent start definitely, 2 under is a decent start. Definitely so. Lot of good signs out there."

Golfers are used to playing through wind and muggy heat in Memphis. A front that kept the temperature a very comfortable 82 Thursday brought winds in from the north, and that created challenges most of the day when many expected good scoring conditions at the 7,239-yard TPC Southwind course.

"It's gusting a bit, but it's definitely from an unusual direction," Harrington said.

"And anybody who has played over the past number of years, it's playing a different golf course. On 9 there, I'm hitting driver off the tee. I normally hit 5-wood off the tee. There's a lot of holes to have changed like that out there. Some are much tougher, and some are a little easier."

Maggert is playing his 16th event this year after having shoulder surgery last June and earned his way back on tour at the qualifying tournament. He tied for 13th at the Sony Open and fifth in the Humana Challenge in January but has missed nine cuts.

He took a week off after missing the cut at Colonial and came to Memphis, where he won in 2006, even though his mother is recovering from surgery for breast cancer in Houston.

He matched his best opening round teeing off on No. 10. He had four birdies on his front nine, including on Nos. 14, 15 and 16 in making the turn at 4 under. He was the only player to reach 6 under, getting there when he eagled the par-5 third after hitting his second from 223 yards to 8 feet.

"I got off to a really good start," Maggert said.

Maggert bogeyed Nos. 5 and 8 to fall back to 4 under. He wasn't happy with his bogey at No. 8 after his ball on the par 3 stuck in mud in the fairway 48 yards shy of the pin. He called over two rules officials hoping for relief on a course that had dried out fairly well from heavy rains Monday considering the mud hadn't been there in Wednesday's pro-am.

"I felt like I was justified, but the powers that be thought that I was not," Maggert said.

Merrick tied for 11th here a year ago, and he matched the score he opened with in 2011 despite not getting a chance at a practice round on the course because he was at a U.S. Open qualifier pushed to Tuesday by weather Monday. He birdied three of his first four holes and birdied three of five on the back nine, his last taking advantage of hitting with the wind to get on the green at the par 5 in two before two-putting from 60 feet for birdie.

This is just the second time Merrick has had at least a share of the lead after 18 holes. He had a piece of the lead at the 2008 Mayakoba Golf Classic and wound up tied for third. Merrick, whose career best finish was second at the 2009 Bob Hope Classic, said he is looking at the leaderboard but isn't looking ahead.

"I'm really happy with where I am today," Merrick said.

Divots: Maggert is playing in Memphis for the 13th time in his career. This is the 10th time he has held at least a share of the 18-hole lead, the first since 2007 U.S. Bank in Milwaukee where he finished tied for fifth. ... Harrison Frazar, who won his first career title here a year ago, opened defense of his title with an 80. He's at risk of being only the third defending champ to miss the cut in Memphis since 2000. ... Luke Guthrie, a senior from the University of Illinois, shot a 69 in his tour debut after turning pro Tuesday. ... Garth Mulroy withdrew with a back injury after shooting 42 through nine holes.

Breaking Up A New Relationship After Communication Breaks Down

New relationships begin with so much promise that, in the early days, it?s hard to imagine that a few weeks or months down the line, there will be such misunderstanding that the relationship looks as if it?s destined for the rocks. However, this is the story of so many relationships that begin on a great footing but reach a road block that leaves each person standing at the crossroads wondering if they are destined for each other or are best to go in different directions.

The reality is that headiness of the early days of any relationship has a time limit on them and if you can weather the changes, it can change for the better. But it does involve high levels of communication ? with yourself to understand the strong emotions that usually accompany these challenges, and with the other person who themselves comes with their own story of what to expect.

Disagreements or fights usually arise because of differences in values, beliefs and expectations. When a couple meet and start the dating process, the mood is light, exciting and full of possibilities of where this might go. However, any challenge to the story we inevitably begin to tell ourselves about the other person and what relationships should be like, gives rise to doubts and fears. This is where a high level of self-awareness becomes invaluable ? hence the saying ?To really get to know yourself, you must know yourself first?.

Do you bail out at the earliest sign that the other person?s behaviour is unacceptable and tell yourself that it is surely a sign that all is not well ? or do you ask yourself and the other person some questions which might throw more light on what the other person is all about?

When emotions are high, it is often difficult to marshal y our thoughts and communicate them clearly to the other person. One thing for sure ? if your or the other person?s reaction to something seems to be way out of proportion to the threat posed, this is almost certainly a reaction to something other than the presenting problem. The presenting problem has pushed a button that gives rise to associated fears, anxieties and storytelling that accompanied the initial experience.

But what do you do now when caught in the grip of a decision of whether the disagreement is a sign that this is not the relationship for you or whether this is just a familiar path you have travelled before and it?s time to break the pattern? The answer I give all my clients is that to have great relationships you must have a great relationship with yourself first. The real work has to be done within yourself ? so time spent understanding your reactions and beliefs about the fight and relationships in general is the best investment you can make for this relationship or any other one. Write down your expectations and beliefs about relationships and how this person or the situation influences how you view what is going on? For example, if someone has an experience of people cheating on them before, it is all too easy for them to make this assumption at the slightest indication of the other person being untrustworthy.

Whatever your story, it is your job to make sense of what is happening to you now and how the past is influencing your present ? only then can you start to make changes to break your link with the pain of the past and learn effective communication skills to navigate new relationships ? without the veil of unquestioned assumptions, perceptions and stories that are often unrelated to the person standing in front of you. You may of course need some coaching or counselling help to do this but it will be the best investment you have made ? because the quality of your communication directly matches the quality of all your relationships.
