As White House race heats up, so do GOP probes

(AP) ? Contempt of Congress? Subpoenas? Stonewalling?

Maybe there's a smoking gun in the Republican-led investigations of the Obama administration ? and President Barack Obama's pushback. But a large part of them could be what always goes on during a presidential campaign: political gamesmanship.

It ranges from House GOP contempt threats against Attorney General Eric Holder to Obama's waving a to-do list in the face of lawmakers.

Within two weeks, Obama fired a new pair of volleys across the bow of the congressional GOP leadership.

The first was his decree ? bypassing Congress ? that the U.S. will not, in most cases, deport illegal immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children. The other was his assertion of executive privilege to shield certain internal Justice Department documents from a House subpoena.

Both actions drew expressions of GOP outrage in Washington and on the campaign trail.

The documents involved a botched U.S. gun-trafficking operation which was designed to track firearms headed into Mexico but which led to disappearance of thousands of weapons and the 2010 shooting death of U.S. Border Patrol agent Brian Terry.

House Speaker John Boehner said the Terry family deserved answers about the guns that killed him and went so far as to suggest a White House cover-up. Others specifically likened the actions of Obama and Holder to the Watergate scandal that brought down President Richard Nixon in 1974.

That may seem like a bit of a stretch, but in an election year outsized charges and countercharges tend to swirl.

Executive privilege has been claimed by presidents going back to George Washington to hide the inner workings of their administrations from congressional eyes.

As a senator, Obama sharply criticized President George W. Bush's invocation of executive privilege ? a blast from the past Republicans were quick to exploit.

Republican challenger Mitt Romney's team leaped into the fray. "President Obama's pledge to run the most open and transparent administration in history has turned out to be just another broken promise," Romney campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul said.

Holder insisted he and his aides have spent countless hours cooperating with Congress and already have provided nearly 8,000 documents on the ill-fated operation.

Escalating tensions on Capitol Hill are likely to intensify as the Supreme Court rules later this week on Obama's health care law and lawmakers face June 30 deadlines on a crucial transportation reauthorization bill and a scheduled rise in student loan interest rates.

The pattern of investigations by Republican-led House panels recalls the many congressional probes during President Bill Clinton's administration.

They ranged from the Monica Lewinsky sex scandal, which led to an impeachment vote by the House, to probes of the suicide of White House aide Vince Foster, the Clinton's Whitewater property dealings in Arkansas, Hillary Rodham Clinton's investment gains, the workings of her health care task force and the mass firing of the White House travel office.

"There were 80 different investigations roughly between 1995 and 2001, and that doesn't include the later investigations of Clinton's 11th-hour pardons and gifts," said Paul Light, professor of public service at New York University. He noted that some of the same committees that relentlessly investigated Clinton are now pursuing Obama.

Light called the gun-trafficking probe and the contempt of Congress threat against Holder "a highly partisan effort to create a big issue for the 2012 election to undermine Obama's credibility through this particularly flawed operation." But he also suggested that Obama's use of executive privilege "makes him look like he might be hiding something."

In any event, Light said such politically charged probes can "tarnish both the president and Congress."

It isn't only Republicans who investigate. When Bush sat in the Oval Office, congressional Democrats launched high-profile probes of the secret deliberations of Vice President Dick Cheney's energy task force and the Justice Department's 2006 midterm firing of nine U.S. attorneys.

The myriad investigations of the Clintons, however, transpired against a far different backdrop than now.

"In Clinton's time, the economy was relatively good and getting better. In Obama's time, it's relatively bad and getting worse," said Doug Schoen, who served as Clinton's pollster and who has criticized Obama's economic performance.

"The picture of intransigence coming out of Washington is not helpful to the president," Schoen said. And, borrowing a Watergate-era term, he added: "Stonewalling can't help Obama. I'm not sure it will hurt him, but it certainly can't help him."

The strictly party-line contempt recommendation came last week from the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, even though its chairman, Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., later acknowledged that Congress has no evidence of a White House cover-up such as alleged by Boehner and several other GOP lawmakers.

Issa had kept alive the possibility of a deal "if we can have those documents." On Tuesday, however, administration officials and House Republican staff members failed to resolve the document dispute.

White House press secretary Jay Carney, quoting Issa, on Monday told reporters, "The chairman said over the weekend that there was no evidence ? let me repeat ? no evidence of White House involvement in any cover-up or attempt to cover up this issue."

Holding an attorney general in contempt of Congress would be unprecedented. It also would probably be unenforceable since it is the Justice Department itself ? headed by the attorney general ? that must act on such recommendations.

"It's clear that this is nothing more than a political witch hunt to distract from the fact that Republicans in Congress have no interest in focusing on what we need to focus on, which is jobs and the economy," said Democratic Party chief Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida.

The gun-trafficking probe joins ongoing ones into the California solar-panel company Solyndra, which received a $528 million federal loan from the Obama administration before filing for bankruptcy protection and laying off 1,100 workers.

McAfee: Sneaky Teens Surf On PCs More Than Mobile, Facebook Rules Over All Other Social Networks

teen computerGoing mobile may be the mantra for a lot of tech companies these days, but if they're in the business of targeting teenagers with their services, perhaps they should think twice: over 37 percent of teens use laptops, and a further 30 percent rely on desktop machines to surf online and engage with digital content, but only 13.5 percent use smartphones and only five percent use tablets, according to a new study out today from Intel-owned security specialists McAfee. The study, covering online activity among U.S. teens, also reveals a pretty massive disconnect between parents and their kids when it comes to how the latter is using the internet -- with some big security implications within that -- and the revelation that teens are not actually that rebellious compared to their adult counterparts when it comes to engaging with social media, in many cases using the same sites their parents do to communicate with each other.

(AP) ? A 21-year-old man was arrested for investigation of first-degree murder after a veteran Denver policewoman who was raising her 12-year-old daughter alone was shot and killed during a free jazz festival, police said Monday.

Suspect Rollen Oliver was taken into custody late Sunday after witnesses gave a description of the gunman. Police also recovered a gun and said they believe Oliver was the only person involved in the attack.

Police Chief Robert White said investigators were not sure if Officer Celena Hollis was the target of the shooting when she answered a call about a disturbance in the park.

"There was a tragic event last night and a beautiful young, single mother and a valuable member of the Denver Police Department lost her life," Public Safety Manager Alex Martinez said.

Authorities said they did not know the cause of the disturbance.

Oliver appeared in court Monday and was ordered held without bond. District attorney's spokeswoman Lynn Kimbrough said a decision on charges was not expected until later this week.

Oliver was escorted into the courtroom by six deputies, all wearing black and blue bands of mourning over their badges.

Oliver wore a red jail jumpsuit and had chains around his waist that were held by a deputy, according to the Denver Post (http://bit.ly/Lld3Bx).

Hollis was in uniform and off-duty when she was shot in the head and later died at a hospital.

Hollis was a Detroit police officer before she joined the Denver Police Department in 2005. She also served as president of the Denver Police Department Black Police Officers Organization.

Denver police Sgt. J.D. Unser said Hollis' parents and sister live in Denver, and Hollis was happy to come to the city, which she considered safer than Detroit.

Detroit Police Chief Ralph L. Godbee Jr. said in a statement that Hollis' death will be difficult and challenging for those who worked with her. On behalf of the Detroit Police Department, he expressed his sympathy to her family, friends and colleagues.

At least three shots were fired Sunday shortly after a jazz band finished playing on a lake-side pavilion stage. Concert-goers scattered during the shooting.

More than 1,000 people were at the City Park Jazz concert, the fourth of 10 shows scheduled for this summer in the annual series that draws families and others to one of the city's more popular summer events. The mayor said late Sunday the concerts should continue.

"We will not surrender what we consider special in this city to anyone," Mayor Michael Hancock said.

Nakira Doss, a jazz singer, said she hopes the series continues.

The 28-year-old mother was at the show Sunday and sitting near the stage with her children, ages 4, 5 and 7, when she heard at least two shots. As people ran past, she told her children to get on the ground before she laid over them.

"I'm trying to show them music, but at what cost," she said, nodding toward her children.

City Park sprawls across several hundred acres east of downtown. It's also the site of the Denver Zoo and Museum of Nature and Science, as well as ponds, trails and recreational fields.

After shots rang out, scores of people ran from the northwest side of the pond and stage area, confusing crowds on the south side of the pond that were still lingering over conversation and picnics in lawn chairs and blankets.

Someone announced from a loudspeaker on stage that the park was closed and told park goers to leave from the south side.

Samuel Bell, 19, of Denver said he was looking for a space for his scooter in the parking and heard several shots.

"We just arrived at the park. It was crowded, it was looking fun," Bell said. "And then 'pa-pa-pa-pa' outta nowhere.

"We just ducked," Bell said. "We pulled off in enough time to get away. It was crazy."

He estimated he was about 10 to 20 feet from the spot where the officer was shot.

Severe reactions to food more common than thought in young children

ScienceDaily (June 25, 2012) ? Young children with allergies to milk and egg experience an unexpectedly high number of reactions to these and other foods, according to researchers at National Jewish Health. More than 70 percent of preschool children with documented or suspected food allergies suffered a significant reaction during the three-year period. Researchers also found that caregivers failed to administer the medication epinephrine in 70 percent of the severe and potentially life-threatening reactions.

The study, conducted by the NIH-funded Consortium of Food Allergy Research, is published in the June 25, 2012, issue of the journal Pediatrics.

"Our findings clearly point to a need for parents and other caregivers to be even more vigilant in avoiding allergenic foods and treating reactions appropriately," said David Fleischer, MD, lead author and assistant professor of pediatrics at National Jewish Health. "They also suggest several strategies that both caregivers and healthcare workers can pursue to make mealtime safe for food-allergic children."

The study followed 512 children ages 3-15 months for an average of three years, documenting all allergic reactions to food. Over the three-year period, the children experienced 1,171 allergic reactions to food. Of the 512 children enrolled, 145 (28 percent) had no allergic reactions, 98 (19 percent) had one reaction and 269 (53 percent) had more than one reaction.

Just over 11 percent (134) of the reactions were categorized as severe, and included symptoms such as swelling in the throat, difficulty breathing, a sudden drop in blood pressure, dizziness or fainting. Almost all of the severe reactions were caused by ingestion of the allergen rather than inhalation or skin contact.

Only 30 percent of the severe reactions were treated with epinephrine, a medication that caregivers can administer to reduce symptoms while waiting for medical care. Reasons for the under treatment included failure to recognize severity of the reaction, not having epinephrine (EpiPen) available, and fears about epinephrine administration.

"It is very important for caregivers of food-allergic children to carry an EpiPen with them at all times, know how to recognize a serious reaction and how to use an EpiPen," said Dan Atkins, MD, co-author and professor of pediatrics at National Jewish Health. "Correctly using an EpiPen at the right time can save a life."

The vast majority of the reactions (89 percent) were caused by accidental exposure, attributed primarily to unintentional ingestion, label-reading errors and cross-contamination. Approximately half of the allergenic foods were provided by persons other than parents. Surprisingly, 11 percent of the reactions followed purposeful exposures to these foods. Researchers are exploring possible reasons for these intentional exposures. They speculate that it could reflect parents' at-home tests to determine if children have outgrown the food allergy.

The researchers identified several areas for improved education, including the need for constant vigilance, accurate label reading, avoidance of non-accidental exposure, prevention of cross-contamination, appropriate epinephrine administration, and education of all caretakers.

Tiger-Cats' Cobourne runs with the ball against Alouettes' Williams during their CFL football game in HamiltonReuters

As the Canadian Football League approaches its annual Canada Day launch to its regular season, let?s fill some space on a slow (relatively speaking) Saturday and look back in time at a series of preseason games once played between teams from the NFL and CFL.

While recently perusing the Official 2011 NFL Record & Fact Book (the 2012 version should be coming out soon, and like a total dork I actually look forward to getting it), I noticed at page 531 a full list of the league?s International Games.

From August 1950 through August 1961, teams from the NFL and CFL played six times during the NFL preseason, in Canada.? (For the Canadian teams, the games were exhibitions played during the CFL regular season.)

It started in 1950, when the Giants beat the Rough Riders in Ottawa, 27-6.? The following year, the Giants thumped the same team in the same town, 41-18.

The series resumed eight years later, when the Chicago Cardinals clobbered the Argonauts, 55-26, in Toronto.? In 1960, the Steelers slammed the Argonauts in Toronto, 43-16.

The exercise ended the following year, with a pair of contests played three days apart.? On August 2 in Toronto, the Cardinals (which had since moved to St. Louis) cold-cocked the Argonauts, 36-7.? On August 5, the Bears bested the Alouettes in Montreal, 34-16.

But the Canadians saved a little face three days after that.? In the one and only AFL-CFL game, the Tiger-Cats took apart the Buffalo Bills in Hamilton, 38-21.

In the past 51 years, no NFL team (or AFL, during the league?s remaining years of existence) has ever again played a CFL team, in Canada or elsewhere.? It?s unlikely that it will ever happen again.? Still, every time you hear the name ?Tiger-Cats? remember that they own the bragging rights over the Bills and, in turn, the league that absorbed the Buffalo franchise in 1970.

Vote result delay frays Egyptian nerves

CAIRO (Reuters) - Allegations of fraud delayed the result of Egypt's presidential election on Thursday, fraying nerves as the Muslim Brotherhood, which claims victory, threatened to take to the streets in protest at moves by the ruling generals to deny them power.

For a second night, thousands of protesters gathered in Cairo's Tahrir Square, cauldron of the revolution that overthrew Hosni Mubarak 16 months ago, to demand the officers who pushed him aside keep their word and hand over to civilians by July 1.

But with little sign that will happen, after the ruling military council dissolved the Islamist-led parliament and set strict limits on the new president's powers, prominent Islamists also sought to dampen talk of violence, for all their promise of permanent vigils on town squares until their demands are met.

Cairo's cafes and social media were alive with chatter about troops preparing to secure major cities, but military sources denied any unusual activity beyond an alertness in case of trouble from supporters of whichever side loses the election.

Adding to a sense of unease, Mubarak was himself back in the news. He was let out of the prison, where he began a life sentence this month, for treatment at a military hospital where the 84-year-old was said by security sources to be slipping in and out of a coma but "stabilising." Many Egyptians suspect fellow generals of exaggerating to get their old comrade out of jail.

With Egypt's economy suffering from prolonged uncertainty - the pound hit a seven-year low against the dollar - Ahmed Shafik, the former general and Mubarak aide running against the Brotherhood's Mohamed Morsy, called for national unity, suggesting the losing candidate might serve in the winner's administration.

The state election committee has spent three days collating counts from the two-day runoff ballot but said it would miss a target of Thursday for announcing the result as it was going through hundreds of complaints submitted by either side. As the weekend starts on Friday, that may mean a wait until Sunday.

"The committee has decided to continue to examine the appeals ... and this will require more time before announcing the final results," the panel said in a statement. State media later quoted it confirming there would be no result on Thursday.

"We must give both sides all the time they need to ensure that the process is fair," Committee Secretary-General Hatem Bagato told Reuters. Officials have refused to give partial results.

OLD FEARS OF RIGGING

In a nation where vote-rigging was the norm during 60 years of military rule, and which is reeling from what critics called a "soft coup" by the generals in the past week, the delay has poured fuel on raging mutual suspicions of foul play.

"There is absolutely no justification for the result of the vote to be delayed," Muslim Brotherhood leader Essam el-Erian told Al-Jazeera on Wednesday, describing complaints from the Shafik camp as either invalid or too few to affect the result.

"I call on General Shafik, who learned chivalry in the Egyptian army, to come out tonight and congratulate the real winner, Dr. Mohamed Morsy," Erian added, while dismissing talk of violence: "There is absolutely no reason for a civil war."

Morsy said within hours of polls closing last Sunday that he beat Shafik by 52 percent to 48 percent, a figure the Brotherhood has stuck to, citing its detailed collation of local results.

Shafik's camp said on Wednesday it remained confident that its man, whom Mubarak appointed prime minister during the uprising, would win - although a spokesman for Shafik also described the vote as "too close to call."

The spokesman accused the Brotherhood of divisive tactics by trying to pre-empt the state election committee, but pledged to honour any result: "In the event that candidate Morsy is indeed successful," he said, "the first telephone call that he will receive will be from candidate Shafik."

Shafik would be willing to serve in a Brotherhood government or other post, he said, while the former air force commander would appoint an Islamist as one of three vice presidents as well as offer ministerial posts to the Muslim Brotherhood.

Either way, the election has shown strong support on both sides of a runoff that left many Egyptians disappointed at the elimination of other candidates in last month's first round. But many voted negatively - against Shafik because he was of the old government, or against Morsy and the prospect of religious rule.

The young, secular urban activists who were inspired by the overthrow of Tunisia's dictator to rise up against Mubarak in the Arab Spring have been dismayed by the success of the Muslim Brotherhood, based on its decades of clandestine organisation. But many put aside their qualms to back Morsy in the runoff.

"Any attempt to impose Shafik, any attempt at manipulation by the military council to impose him on us, will take Egypt into a period of instability and tension," Ahmed Maher, of the April 6 youth protest movement, told Reuters.

"We will take to the streets and protest."

WESTERN QUALMS

Whoever is declared winner, the next president's powers have already been curbed in the last-minute decree issued by the army after it ordered the Islamist-led parliament dissolved.

The European Union on Wednesday joined the United States, both major aid donors, in expressing "concern" at what the army moves meant for a promised transition to democracy. But with the Egyptian army still, as it was throughout Mubarak's 30 years in power, a major ally in the confrontation with militant Islam, Western pressure on Cairo's generals may be limited.

On Tuesday, election monitors from the Carter Center, founded by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, who brokered the peace between Egypt and Israel that unlocked U.S. aid, said they could not call the election free and fair as the were denied sufficient access to polling stations and results collation.

Brotherhood supporters and others staged a protest on Tuesday against the army's decree to limit the president's role and retain powers. A movement official, Osama Yassin, said on Wednesday he was calling on supporters to set up open-ended vigils in town squares across the nation to make their demands.

"We reject the overturning of the popular will," he said.

But Saad al-Katatni, speaker of the dissolved parliament, said the Brotherhood would not fight back with violence the way Algerian Islamists did after the army there cancelled a vote they had won in 1992, touching off a decade of bloody civil war.

"We are fighting a legal struggle via the establishment and a popular struggle in the streets," Katatni said. "This is the ceiling. I see the continuation of the struggle in this way," he told Reuters in the first interview since the dissolution.

"What happened in Algeria cannot be repeated in Egypt."

Egyptians rally for power, Mubarak ailing

CAIRO (Reuters) - Staking its claim to Egypt's presidency, the Muslim Brotherhood rallied in Cairo on Tuesday to demand the ruling generals hand over real power, following moves by the army that its U.S. ally labeled an assault on democracy.

Up to 10,000 gathered as darkness fell on Tahrir Square, cradle of last year's Arab Spring revolution, chanting the name of the Islamist who they say won the weekend's presidential election and condemning measures to curb his powers that will leave much legal authority in the hands of the army for months to come.

The election result is due to be announced later this week.

"Down, down with military rule!" chanted the crowd, one of the biggest in months at the capital's protest rendezvous, but showing no sign of seeking confrontation with troops as the Brotherhood treads warily through a shifting political arena.

"We are here to finish the revolution," said Ahmed Badawy, a Brotherhood member bussed in, like many, from the provinces.

"We are showing the military council we can see that it is trying to reproduce the old regime and abort the revolution."

In a mark of the movement's desire to put violence behind it and assure Egyptians, fellow Arabs and anxious world powers that it can rule a democracy, one man held a poster of presidential candidate Mohamed Morsy reading "Egypt's Erdogan". Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan is a model, for some, of modern Islamic leadership in a nation also long used to influential generals.

"The military council should stick to what it is supposed to do," said the man holding the sign, Hassan al-Attar, 60, adding they were clinging to power for fear of joining ousted autocrat Hosni Mubarak - in prison for oppression and corruption.

News as the rally was breaking up that Mubarak, 84, had been moved from prison and was critically ill in hospital left most little moved. Their anger is directed at those who followed him.

The dissolution of a new, Islamist-led parliament on the eve of the presidential election run-off, and a decree issued as it ended that took new powers for the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF), have been widely condemned in Egypt and abroad.

But weariness after the turmoil and economic hardship of the past 16 months, and a lack of enthusiasm for two presidential contenders from the familiar old adversaries of the army and the Brotherhood, have dimmed many rebellious spirits.

Despite calls to rally, few of the young, urban activists who first launched the revolt turned out on Tahrir on Tuesday.

While many feel betrayed by the generals, who pushed out Mubarak to appease the revolt but now seem to be entrenching their own privileges, the latest anger has not turned violent; neither the Brotherhood nor the army, engaged in a hesitant new symbiosis over the past year, seem anxious to start a fight.

WESTERN DILEMMA

The rise of Islamists, not just in Egypt but other Arab states where autocrats were overthrown last year, has also left Western powers with a dilemma, so that criticism of SCAF's moves seems unlikely to bring any immediate sanction for a military elite that has been funded for decades by the United States.

The Pentagon, which gave the Middle East's biggest army $1.3 billion in annual aid this year, rebuked Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi's military council on Monday and urged it to hand "full power" to civilians, as it had promised to do by July 1.

The State Department said it was "concerned by decisions that appear to prolong the military's hold on power" and urged SCAF "to restore popular and international confidence in the democratic transition process by following through on their stated commitments".

But worries in Washington's vocal ally Israel about Islamist leaders in Cairo reneging on a 1979 peace treaty, or aiding Gaza's Hamas militants, mean Washington is unlikely to alienate its Egyptian military allies for the sake of the Brotherhood.

A militant attack on Israel's border was a reminder of the lawlessness Egypt's revolution has brought to the Sinai desert. But Israeli officials say the fact that U.S. aid is conditional on peace with Israel will keep Egypt's Islamists in line.

"Any rise of an Islamic regime ... is worrisome," Vice Prime Minister Moshe Yaalon said. "But on the other hand, Egypt today is dependent to a large extent on the peace agreement."

Egypt's election committee refuses to give results from the weekend's presidential run-off before Thursday. The Brotherhood says its data show Morsy won by 52 percent to 48 over former general Ahmed Shafik, Mubarak's last prime minister.

Shafik's camp shot back that they have a one-point lead.

But army and election committee sources say the count does show Morsy winning. The military seems to be prepared for that.

"SQUARE ONE"

Where the political system goes now is unclear. What had been seen as the final step in a "transition to democracy", the inauguration of a president, now seems only a beginning.

"We're back at square one," Hussein Ibrahim, a senior Brotherhood member of the dissolved parliament, told Reuters.

"After Egyptians waited for the election of a new president to end the transitional period, we discovered that by electing a new president we are restarting the transitional period."

At a news conference, a spokesman for the Brotherhood played down talk of head-on conflict with an army with which the movement has lately developed a cautious working relationship.

"Why do we rush to the word 'confrontation'?" said Yasser Ali. "We do not seek any confrontation with anyone. No one in Egypt wants confrontation ... There has to be dialogue between national forces, and the people alone must decide their fate."

The secretive SCAF has appeared to make up rules as it goes along for what is supposed to be progress toward democracy, giving it considerable flexibility in interpretation.

With the economy, notably the tourist trade, suffering badly, Egypt is looking for financing from the IMF. For the generals to maintain influence but avoid taking all the blame for economic troubles, they have an interest in sharing at least some responsibility with civilian politicians.

Speaking publicly on Monday, generals from SCAF insisted they were still committed to a full handover of power and blamed squabbling politicians for the failure to draft a constitution.

One noted that the new president was free to appoint his own government, which could then draft laws that the head of state could pass into law. But the process will involve SCAF, in its role as legislator, able to amend or blocks laws as it sees fit.

Another general pointed out it was not SCAF but the constitutional court, staffed by judges from the old regime, that annulled the results of January's parliamentary election.

In another potentially explosive judicial saga on Tuesday, a court adjourned until September one of several civil cases that challenge the Brotherhood's very right to exist or engage in politics, using old laws aimed specifically at the Islamists.

Your home may have been ideal (or at least close to that) when you first moved in, but as time goes by and you progress further in your life, you realize that you want to make things a bit better for yourself, and get a little extra luxury thrown in. And there's nothing bad with that -- everyone deserves a better life if they've earned it. It's important to utilize the right companies and tools for this job though, because remodeling your home can be made a lot easier if you work with the proper company on the market. There are various factors that can define the "right" company for home remodeling for your personal needs -- but you'll generally need to be aware of their method of operations. First, start with the obvious -- check for any customer reviews or opinions, published online or elsewhere. This can be a pretty good indicator for whether you're working with a reliable company or not. Note that the lack of any reviews online doesn't mean anything bad for the company -- they may just be relatively new on the market. Insurance is also important -- various things can go wrong in the course of the renovation company's work, no matter how good their workers are. Because of this, it's important to ensure that you'll be insured against any damage that may occur in the renovation process, so you can leave them to work without having to worry about the state of your home when you get back to check it next. More and more people are recognizing the importance of being green in all aspects of our lives nowadays -- and this is reflected in the way some companies work. It's a good idea to work with a remodeling company that's familiar with the concept of working with environmentally friendly equipment and materials, as you'll need to do your duty in protecting our environment when you're providing some extra luxury in your life. In some cases you may also need something about your home's construction changed for safety reasons -- this can include all sorts of details, but one common feature is the lead paint used in older buildings. If your home has been decorated with lead paint, a good remodeling company should be able to take care of that easily and without too much hassle, allowing you to live with your family safely and without having to worry about any harmful substances in the surrounding area. A good guarantee for the longevity of the job that has been done on your home is also something nice to have -- especially if you're ordering a more expensive and complicated remodeling job. Just make sure that the company guarantees that the job has been completed according to the common industry standards and regulations, and that they'll cover any damages that might occur in the future from improperly conducted parts of the job. Knowing that, you should be perfectly fine with the results that you get from your home remodeling, and be able to enjoy a new home for a long time to come.

Oil prices fall as US supplies grow

(AP) ? The price of oil is down Wednesday after the government said U.S. supplies unexpectedly grew last week.

Benchmark U.S. crude fell by $1.61 to $82.74 per barrel in New York while Brent crude lost $1.31 to $94.45 per barrel in London.

The Energy Information Administration reported that oil supplies grew by 2.9 million barrels last week. Analysts were predicting that supplies would fall by 600,000 barrels. Oil supplies have risen this year to the highest levels since 1990, thanks to a boom in North American production.

Analysts say oil prices could fluctuate greatly in the afternoon when the Federal Reserve announces whether it will take action to stimulate the economy.

At the pump, U.S. gasoline prices fell by a penny to a national average of $3.487 per gallon.

Microsoft tackles Android and iPad with Windows 8 Surface tablet

In a show of hype the likes of which Microsoft hasn?t seen for a while, two new tablets running the next version of Windows were revealed at a special event in Los Angeles last night.

The Surface for Windows RT and Surface for Windows 8 Pro both feature similar external designs with a slick magnesium casing, keyboard addon that doubles as a screen cover and a slim kickstand which pops out the rear.

The Windows RT model is running an NVIDIA Tegra chipset (presumably the Tegra3, though this was not stated), has a 10.6-inch HD display and either 32 or 64GB storage. It includes a full size USB 2.0 port and microSD card slot.

The Windows 8 Pro version is more akin to an ultraportable laptop and will use an Intel i5 CPU, Full HD display and come with up to 128GB memory, expandable by an additional 64GB or more using its microSDXC slot. The Pro also includes USB 3.0 and Mini Display Port for external monitor output.

There are minor differences in size and weight, the RT Surface weighs 676g and is 9.3mm thick compared to the 903g and 13.5mm of the Pro Surface.

Windows 8 has been designed from the ground up to be used on touch screen devices, a controversial move as even desktop PCs will boot into the Metro interface, which features a tiled design familiar to anyone who?s ever used a Windows Phone device.

Windows RT has been made specifically for ARM CPUs, a first for Microsoft and something which could potentially cause some confusion. Aside from special versions of IE and MS Office, standard Windows programs will not be compatible with RT. Developers will be required to port their software and make it available through a Windows software store.

Several key details were absent from Microsoft?s presentation, notably pricing or any indication of battery life. As it runs a full desktop OS with a specification similar to ultrabooks we?d speculate a price tag of at least ?600-700 for the Pro Surface. The Windows RT edition is more directly competing with the iPad and Android tablets so will need to come in under ?500 to have any chance at making a dent.?

The RT Surface is due to launch around the same time as Windows 8 in Autumn of this year, while the Pro Surface goes on sale "three months after".
