Novel power system for space travel tested

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? A team of researchers, including engineers from Los Alamos National Laboratory, has demonstrated a new concept for a reliable nuclear reactor that could be used on space flights.

The research team recently demonstrated the first use of a heat pipe to cool a small nuclear reactor and power a Stirling engine at the Nevada National Security Site's Device Assembly Facility near Las Vegas. The Demonstration Using Flattop Fissions (DUFF) experiment produced 24 watts of electricity. A team of engineers from Los Alamos, the NASA Glenn Research Center and National Security Technologies LLC (NSTec) conducted the experiment.

Heat pipe technology was invented at Los Alamos in 1963. A heat pipe is a sealed tube with an internal fluid that can efficiently transfer heat produced by a reactor with no moving parts. A Stirling engine is a relatively simple closed-loop engine that converts heat energy into electrical power using a pressurized gas to move a piston. Using the two devices in tandem allowed for creation of a simple, reliable electric power supply that can be adapted for space applications.

Researchers configured DUFF on an existing experiment, known as Flattop, to allow for a water-based heat pipe to extract heat from uranium. Heat from the fission reaction was transferred to a pair of free-piston Stirling engines manufactured by Sunpower Inc., based in Athens Ohio. Engineers from NASA Glenn designed and built the heat pipe and Stirling assembly and operated the engines during the experiment. Los Alamos nuclear engineers operated the Flattop assembly under authorization from the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA).

DUFF is the first demonstration of a space nuclear reactor system to produce electricity in the United States since 1965, and the experiment confirms basic nuclear reactor physics and heat transfer for a simple, reliable space power system.

"The nuclear characteristics and thermal power level of the experiment are remarkably similar to our space reactor flight concept," said Los Alamos engineer David Poston. "The biggest difference between DUFF and a possible flight system is that the Stirling input temperature would need to be hotter to attain the required efficiency and power output needed for space missions."

"The heat pipe and Stirling engine used in this test are meant to represent one module that could be used in a space system," said Marc Gibson of NASA Glenn. "A flight system might use several modules to produce approximately one kilowatt of electricity."

Current space missions typically use power supplies that generate about the same amount of electricity as one or two household light bulbs. The availability of more power could potentially boost the speed with which mission data is transmitted back to Earth, or increase the number of instruments that could be operated at the same time aboard a spacecraft.

"A small, simple, lightweight fission power system could lead to a new and enhanced capability for space science and exploration," said Los Alamos project lead Patrick McClure. "We hope that this proof of concept will soon move us from the old-frontier of Nevada to the new-frontier of outer space."

Los Alamos research on the project was made possible through Los Alamos's Laboratory-Directed Research and Development Program (LDRD), which is funded by a small percentage of the Laboratory's overall budget to invest in new or cutting-edge research. NASA Glenn and NSTec also used internal support to fund their contributions to the experiment.

"Perhaps one of the more important aspects of this experiment is that it was taken from concept to completion in 6 months for less than a million dollars," said Los Alamos engineer David Dixon. "We wanted to show that with a tightly-knit and focused team, it is possible to successfully perform practical reactor testing."

Procurement and the Buying of PR Services | Business 2 Community

It always feels like a tussle between Procurement and the PR agency.

tussle procurement and PR business storytelling public relations

The Council of PR Firms offers a paper called, ?Procurement Professionals Q&A: Advancing the Working Relationship with Public Relations Firms? which proposes the money side be handled as thus:

With regard to the financial negotiation, there should be a short term and longer term goal. Immediately, the client organization should communicate the reason for retaining the public relations firm and how the firm?s success will be evaluated. Longer term, the focus should be on relationship management based on the scope of work, benchmarks against goals, and appropriate compensation. Each party should make the other aware of what it is seeking to achieve in the relationship. The most successful and productive long term relationships are based on mutual respect and open dialogue.

It all sounds so good ? cue the birds chirping in the background ? in theory.

Unfortunately, the reality rarely plays out this way, at least in our experiences of interacting with Procurement. Instead, Procurement?s overriding objective if not singular mission is to secure the PR agency?s services at the lowest price point possible. While the Council?s paper stresses that PR services are not a commodity, Procurement hasn?t got the memo typically treating the PR agency negotiation like an express mail contract.

I do understand the quest by every company in the galaxy to gain value from their outside purchases.

Everyone wants a good deal.

I get it.

But I also think Procurement misses the big picture in the sense that no matter how tightly you scope the assignment and squeeze the PR agency, the intangible called ?care? is a huge wildcard. If an agency cares about the client, it actually goes above and beyond the statement of work (what a concept.).

Assuming Procurement professionals read the Council?s paper, I?m not convinced anything would change. The core issue is not Procurement?s lack of understanding the world of PR. The core issue is a rewards system that motivates Procurement to pummel vendors into submission to save another nickel an hour.

I?d love to hear your views on this one.

Nepal rites to banish ghosts of fallen Gurkha soldiers

KATHMANDU (Reuters) - Wrapped in white and with their heads shaven, retired Gurkha soldiers sat cross-legged on the stems of dried rice plants for three days of symbolic and traditional mourning, laying to rest the souls of fellow soldiers who fought and died for Britain.

Hailing from the foothills of the Himalayas, the Gurkhas are known for their fierce fighting skills and big curved khukuri knife. They have served in the British army since 1815 when a peace agreement was reached by the British East India Company after it suffered heavy casualties during an invasion of Nepal.

The Gurkha Army Ex-servicemen's Organisation (GAESO), a group which works for the retired soldiers, said about 60,000 soldiers from Nepal were killed in the two World Wars but that this had never been properly acknowledged.

"Britain did not recognize their contributions and sacrifice", said GAESO President Padam Bahadur Gurung.

The group organized mourning ceremonies where priests from the 17 ethnic groups to which the Gurkha soldiers belonged performed separate rituals at Syangja, 135 km (84 miles) west of Kathmandu.

"Their souls are still wandering around because their funerals were never held according to customs and traditions," GAESO said in a statement. "The souls should be freed by performing the customary rites."

The mourners sat for three days in separate tents and lit butter lamps and incense sticks as thousands of visitors paid tribute to the soldiers in rituals which concluded on Thursday.

Many in Hindu majority Nepal believe that their children and grandchildren cannot live in peace if the customary mourning rites are not performed for deceased ancestors and their souls are left to roam like ghosts.

The Gurkhas were part of the British Indian army before 1947 but were split between the two countries after India became independent from Britain.

Gurkhas have fought in recent years in the Falklands, Iraq and Afghanistan but their numbers, which topped 112,000 in World War II, have fallen to about 3,000 in the British armed forces at present.

AUSTRALIA: Ford axes 212 workers

By Graeme Roberts | 16 November 2012

Ford Australia has had to make 212 forced redundancies amongst its factory workers.

The cuts, the first forced layoffs in 15 years, followed an underwhelming number of volunteer redundancies after the company announced it would be slashing jobs earlier in the year, according to The Australian.

In July Ford said it would cut 440 jobs from its Geelong and Broadmeadows plant by November as it slowed production from 209 cars a day to 148 due to the falling demand for the Falcon sedan and Territory SUV.

Ford saved 110 jobs through redeployment and in-house transfers. This brought the cuts down to 330, with a further 118 workers taking voluntary redundancy.

"Unfortunately, as we didn't achieve the required number of redundancies voluntarily, the company is moving ahead with a compulsory redundancy programme,'' spokeswoman Sinead Phipps told the paper.

Ford said its goal was to execute the redundancies in a "dignified and caring manner" and not "single out" employees. It said it would beef up security during the redundancy process but assured workers it would not be escorting people off the premises, as was done during the Toyota job losses at its Altona factory earlier in the year.

Production was shut down for the day on Friday but everyone was still paid a full day's wage. Workers had been instructed not to show up for their usual shift and instead attended a scheduled meeting with their manager and HR representative. Those who faced the sack were given information on benefits, retraining and financial counselling and were told to leave immediately.

Australian Manufacturing Workers Union?vehicle division assistant federal secretary Dave Smith said?the union was happy with the way Ford had handled the redundancies.

"Generally speaking, the company has prescribed to the principle we asked them to and that is to treat people with respect and dignity," he said.

Smith said the government needed to support Australian-made cars and keep work in the country's car factories (now down to just three).

"Governments at all levels are some of the biggest purchasers of vehicles for their fleets. And tragically, 10 years ago, the level of Australian cars in government fleets was 66% but now it has been halved to 33%," Smith said.

Default Tricks ? Could It Be Worthy Of Having Avast Antivirus ...

All of network infrastructures for just about any size of organizations require net connectivity for global communication program. Email or messaging becomes a representation of formal organization communication replacing fax technique in some instances. Fax program is now integrated with all the networking applications which include voice more than IP applications. Corporate internet has develop into an critical online business representation for worldwide recognition of the organizations. All of them call for a laptop network infrastructure with world-wide-web connectivity.

The benefits of possessing world wide web connectivity are apparent to support the availability of business communication program, however the emerging threats from the wild web are often forgotten by mostly smaller firms. Even medium to enterprise class corporations present not adequate protection towards the small business network. One can find three major components you can easily implement to guard your company network: firewall, network safety software and patch management.

Firewall

A hardware firewall is commonly utilized in each with the entry point for the net for the internal network. All the inbound site visitors from the online world must be controlled and logged by way of a single examine point ? the firewall. By default configuring the firewall really should deny each of the inbound traffic except all the site visitors that?s explicitly allowed or granted. Giving the firewall is like supplying the front door of the property to stop any one get in to the property except authorized persons. However a conventional firewall will not be enough in guarding the threats up to the applications level. Significantly malicious application from the online world cannot be blocked 100% to flow into your private network. As a result other levels of security defense that include network safety software and patch management should be implemented as additions of the firewall.

There are lots of varieties of network safety computer software you can implement in additions of firewall to defend your network against any threats which include antivirus software package and patch management.

Centralized Antivirus Software

Do you understand that hundreds or perhaps 1000s of new viruses and worms are introduced into the wild world-wide-web each and every month? We do not know the time frame it takes when new viruses or worms are sent out for the wild world wide web, the time they may be discovered, the time new antivirus are released by the antivirus software plus the last is your response time in adding the signature updates into your pc. During this time frame your computers are vulnerable to all the threats produced by these new virus or worms. It is therefore, implementing a centralized antivirus application for the network safety software is very fundamental.

There are many antivirus application are made for corporations or corporate networks by obtaining a centralized antivirus server with automatic on the internet updates to the vendor?s website anytime new signature updates are accessible. Any computers on the network will download the updates to the antivirus server as an alternative to downloading directly from the vendor?s internet site. This may lessen important bandwidth latency.

Centralized Patch Management Server

Every single of the Windows-based computers is configured with automatic updates straight from the net. Within a sizeable networking atmosphere with Windows computers, automatic updates directly from Windows update server web page is not a superb practice. It is easy to consider how countless computers downloading the updates directly from the web at the same time, your web bandwidth will likely be hogged and saturated that will disrupt the availability of your business in the finish. Its consequently implementing centralized Windows update server within the corporate network is actually an a lot superior resolution to conserve your net bandwidth.

Microsoft offers you a totally free WSUS (Windows services update server) program you are able to install in a server with Active directory method in spot. You are able to configure the server to download the updates directly from the internet and the many computers on the network will automatically download the updates from the WSUS server. This way you may zero cost up your online bandwidth from being hogged by windows updates activities.

A firewall, network safety software program with centralized server and patch management server within the network are three vital security protections against any emerging threats from the web.
