a new opinion in Sports about Shakespeare Alpha X Beach Fishing Rod

Me man, me must hunt.

There is something to be said for basic instincts. I am not talking about the Sharon stone movie made famous for that one scene. You know the one, the one where she drives a car (hmmm.). no, I am talking about the instincts that lie deep in all of us. The instincts of self preservation, of reproduction and somewhere deep down inside all men of a certain age, the instinct to hunt. You know, the need to bring food back to the cave.

A few years ago, I found my hunting instinct. It hit with a vengeance, as I initially took up fly fishing, and I must say I have never looked back since. The thrill of outwitting a wild brown trout, by imitating a fly using nothing but feathers and thread on a hook cannot be surpassed. Besting a hard wintered fish after a tense battle of brains and brawn gives one an intense feeling of pleasure, that can be likened only to those of your formative years, when you are in the loving walls of you family home. Indeed, I have come full circle now, as I bring my kids with me often when I fish. They seem to get as much pleasure from as I do, not to mention the fresh air and long hikes to the best spots.

The instinct took me further still, and I as so many men are, was drawn to the sea. I think that it holds an awe and wonder that cannot be matched elsewhere. So beautiful, yet so violent. And what lies beneath is anyone's guess, as we have explored far less of the sea as a species, than the rest of the world. The urge to fish the sea took my, and as I did not have access to a boat, I found myself in need of a rod sufficient to use to cast from the beach.

Starting out

I wanted to try this out, but like all new skills, I did not know if i would like, or even be any good at beach fishing. First stop was the internet, where I found that the sea could be fished without need of a liscence, and really any spot can be fished from, as long as there are no local by-laws in place stating otherwise. A quick phone call to my local council put any worries at rest, and I knew that I was legal, and ready to go.

With that info in tow, my search for a rod grew pace. I was able to borrow a real, and line etc was not hard to come by, but a rod needed to be thought about. I needed it to be cheap, robust and easy to master. After a few minutes searching the net, the alpha x had threw up its rather beautiful head several times. pricewise, it ticked all the boxes, and reviews were not too bad. Also it was by Shakespeare, a name I new well from my fishing past, and one that goes hand in hand with quality. That was it. I was going to order the alpha x, and start my sea fishing adventure.

What is the rod like?

The rod arrived a few days later. As I bought it through sports direct for the princely sum of ?24.99, not only did I get my rod and cloth bag, but also a novelty oversize sports direct mug. Bargain! The rod was well wrapped, and came with the afforementioned flimsy cloth bag. The quality of the rod bag doesn't bother me, as I rarely use them, but if you plan to then bear this in mind.

The rod was 12' in length. Not as heavy as I first thought it would be, and fairly pretty looking. The rod appears black, but on closer inspection in bright light, it has a textured graphic effect on it that gives it an olive green hue. Rather pleasing to the eye. As I inspected the rod further, the eyes are well put on, and are lined for better wear. The handles are of tough black foam. just as you would expect really. On putting my oversized sea fishing reel on the rod, the feel became more realistic. The reel mounts were cushioned and kept a firm grip of the reel, allowing it no movement which can be potentially devastating.

The rod is rated 4-8 oz, or 100-200grams. This means that it is capable of casting large weights, and performs best when throwing out weights of between 100, and 200 grams. When I got out fishing, I found this to be ideal, as you need to cast really big weights to get out to the fish, and this rod handled them beautifully. The stiff action of the rod really need this weight to get the most efficient cast, as it is this weight that allows the rod to flex and create the potential energy that propels your bait the 100 plus yards that you need.

What did I think?

The rod is great. I have found it to be sturdy and easy to manage. The fact that it is a three piece means that it is easy to transport and set up. It certainly pings those large weights out there, and uses every inch of its twelve feet and all of its stiffness to great benefit. Its light to hold, without feeling flimsy, and whats better, I have caught lots of lovely fish using it.

On the downside, the rods bag is poorly made, but again this was not a problem to me. More of a problem was the fact that the stiffness of the rod means that you get a poor fight out of smaller fish like mackerel. I fear that this is a problem with all so called beachcaster rods, and it unfortunately is necessary to get the fish on the hook in the first place. Perhaps the fact that I catch decent trout on light fly tackle has spoiled me, and the fight was never really going to be any good by comparison.

The rod has been a good buy, and has got me going in the world of sea fishing. I think that it will still only be a once in a while activity for me, which means that I can justify the rods small price tag, and enjoy it. I would recommend this rod to anyone wanting to start out beach casting. It will stand up to whatever the beginner can throw at it, and it will not break the bank. Great budget rod.

Summary: great budget rod, and a great price too.

A Map Of NFL Team Allegiance

Facebook data shows exactly where the fans are.

We've posted visualizations from Facebook's Data Science Team before, but I think it's safe to say that their newest effort--a county-level map of NFL fandom across the U.S.--is their most admirable yet. Based on the team page Likes and locations of over 35 million account holders, it's probably the most accurate, precise geography of sports fandom ever.

Deadspin has a nice run-down of the take-aways, to which I would add only one question: Does anyone know what that blob of Steelers fans is doing in southern Oregon?

Elder Care Management Services and Assisted Living Placement ...

As the baby boom generation ages, more and more people are faced with the challenges of finding the proper care for older loved ones.? For seniors who need constant care, this often means looking at options for assisted living facilities.? Even if an older person is able to live at home, when loved ones do not live nearby, help is often needed.? The fields of assisted living placement services and elder care management services have expanded, and various levels of service are available for those who need help.

For aging seniors, the transition from fully independent living to the need for assisted living is sometimes gradual and sometimes sudden.? Loved ones often find themselves needing to choose an assisted living facility without having done the research necessary to find the best fit.? In other cases, loved ones may not live close by, making site visits difficult.? In this type of situation, an assisted living placement service can be very helpful.

Assisted living placement companies usually offer counseling and assessment services to determine the necessary level of care, and arrange for tours of facilities in your area.? Such companies usually collect fees from the facilities themselves, so their services are free to the consumer.

Whether a senior resides in an assisted living facility or at home, it can be difficult for loved ones to deal with medical, financial and insurance concerns, especially if they do not live nearby.? In these cases, elder care management services can provide the help needed.

One such company is Golden Years Living Solutions, based in White Plains, which provides a free service to families who are searching for senior residences (including assisted living, Alzheimer?s/dementia care and independent/55+ retirement communities).? After consulting with the family, an advisor provides information on the various senior living options available (including care level, rates, availability and promotions) based on the families? needs and desired location and budget.

Caring for an aging loved one can be challenging, and it is important to know that you don?t need to do it alone.

Windows Phone-using Gmailers get a reprieve

Windows Phone 8 Google Sync

Google extends EAS sevice through July; Microsoft says it'll update to CalDav/CardDAV

Google is making a nice gesture today by extending the cutoff point for using EAS (Exchange Active Sync) to sync Google services to Windows Phone devices until July 31, 2013. If you'll recall back to December 2012, Google swiftly pulled support for EAS on Windows Phones, with the service set to expire today, January 30th. Google's hope was to move everyone over to using IMAP -- along with CalDAV and CardDAV for contacts and calendar -- to sync all types of devices. Because Android and iOS both support IMAP, CalDAV and CardDAV there were no issues to be had. Windows Phone, on the other hand, didn't have the extra protocols ready to go and was about to leave new customers out in the cold when they went to add Google accounts to their devices.

Luckily for both Microsoft and its customers, the new deal extends EAS support for Google Account syncing another 6 months. This will give Microsoft time to properly integrate CalDAV and CardDAV into Windows Phone, so that when this new extended cutoff period ends users will not be losing any features.

Oil steady as US, China manufacturing improves

The price of oil was steady above $96 a barrel on Tuesday, supported by expanding manufacturing output in the world's two largest economies and ahead of the release this week of several key U.S. economic indicators.

By early afternoon in Europe, benchmark oil for March delivery was up 5 cents to $96.50 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 56 cents to finish at $96.44 a barrel on the Nymex on Monday.

On Monday, the U.S. reported that demand for long-lasting manufactured goods rose sharply in December. That comes on top of an improved housing picture and strong earnings by major companies. Many analysts think the economy's sluggish recovery will pick up stream by 2014.

China's manufacturing activity has also recently rebounded as the country emerges from its deepest slump since the 2008 global financial crisis. Analysts have all but stopped predicting that the world's No. 2 economy will have a "hard landing," or a sharp downturn.

"Oil prices are continuing to profit from the brightening of market sentiment," said a report from Commerzbank in Frankfurt. "However, as compared to equity markets, which are trading at multi-year highs, oil prices have underperformed of late and therefore have catch-up potential."

It's a big week for U.S. economic indicators. The government will release reports on weekly jobless claims, unemployment and fourth-quarter growth. And the Federal Reserve's policy committee holds a two-day meeting that concludes on Wednesday.

Brent crude, used to price international varieties of oil, was down 12 cents to $113.36 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange in London.

In other energy futures trading on Nymex:

? Wholesale gasoline declined 1.31 cents to $2.9278 per gallon.

? Natural gas lost 5.4 cents to $3.235 per 1,000 cubic feet.

? Heating oil retreated 0.11 cent to $3.0532 a gallon.

Microsoft's Newest Office Arrives - Business Insider

The Windows 8 version of Office is officially here.

It comes in two flavors: a cloud version that is delivered over the Internet, Office 365, and traditional software that runs on your PC, previously known as Office 15, now called Office 2013.

Both of these come in a few versions too. Office 365 University is for college students, faculty and staff. It will cost $79.99 for a four-year subscription, which Microsoft points out comes to $1.67 per month.

There's also the Office 365 Home Premium version, which is a single subscription meant to cover a family, or up to 5 users.?Microsoft previously announced that it will cost about $100 a year, or $8.33 per month.

The downloadable-software versions also come in different versions: Office Home & Student 2013, Office Home & Business 2013, and Office Professional 2013. Those will cost $139.99, $219.99, and $399.99, respectively.

If you need Office for more than one computer in the house, it's obviously less expensive, at least at first, to buy the cloud version for $99 a year than to buy Office 2013 for multiple computers.

While it's true that you can also get a scaled-down version of Office for free via?Microsoft's SkyDrive, these new versions of Office are set up to work with Windows 8 touch devices.

Google Apps, which competes most directly with Office 365, is free for schools. For?businesses, it costs $50 per user per year.

Microsoft is releasing new business versions of Office 365 for Windows 8 on February 27.?

Analysis: In Davos, world seeks U.S. engagement

DAVOS, Switzerland (Reuters) - As President Barack Obama starts his second term, the world's business and political elite pines for greater American engagement to tackle a thicket of security challenges.

From Syria to Mali, from Iran to the South China Sea, the United States' reluctance to be drawn into conflicts far from its shores was a leitmotiv of geopolitical debate at this year's World Economic Forum in Davos.

The absence of top Obama administration officials from the annual brainstorming and networking event in the Swiss mountains symbolized to some a perceived pullback from global leadership, even though it was Inauguration Week in Washington.

Leaders of Russia, Germany, Britain, Italy, South Africa, Jordan and many other nations made the journey.

U.S. bankers, business leaders and academics were out in force, but the most senior U.S. government officials were a Treasury undersecretary, an assistant secretary of state and the outgoing U.S. Trade Representative.

Delegates debated whether and when China would overtake America as the number one economy and global power -- estimates ranging from the early 2020s to never -- and what troubles were brewing while Washington remains in hands-off mode.

The ground rules of many Davos panels preclude identifying the speakers. One minister, shielded by that anonymity, lamented the dangers of "a world without American leadership".

Without U.S. involvement, one session was told, Syria would become a "Somalia on the Mediterranean", with Middle East states waging a proxy war via sectarian factions, some of which would export militant violence to the neighbors and to Europe.

Iran may accelerate its nuclear program to try to break out of isolation, Vali Nasr of Johns Hopkins University said, because Washington is squeezing it with economic sanctions but shunning either direct diplomatic engagement or military action.

"NEW TALIBAN IN SYRIA"

In a public address, King Abdullah of Jordan said his country, which had sent troops to fight Islamist militants in Afghanistan, now faces a "new Taliban in Syria", where an al-Qaeda affiliate has gained ground among forces fighting to oust President Bashar al-Assad. It could take years after the fall of Assad to "clean them out", the king said.

His fragile desert kingdom has taken in some 300,000 Syrian refugees, straining its thin resources and political stability. Some Syrian exiles present in Davos complained that Jordan has closed its border to Syrian opposition fighters.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, whose country has absorbed some 150,000 refugees and serves as a rear base for rebel fighters, said the international community would one day have to apologize to the Syrian people, as it had done in Rwanda, for failing to intervene to prevent massacres.

At least 60,000 people have been killed in two years of civil war in Syria, according to the United Nations.

Saudi Arabia's Prince Turki al-Faisal, a senior member of the royal family, former head of intelligence and ambassador to London and Washington, said the rebels were not receiving game-changing anti-aircraft and anti-tank weapons because of U.S. and manufacturers' restrictions on transfers to third parties.

U.S. strategic experts explained that Washington's sole interest in Syria was to prevent any threat to Israel and ensure chemical weapons did not fall into "terrorist" hands.

The same reluctance to be sucked into conflict meant Washington would provide little more than verbal and intelligence support for France as it battles in Mali against al-Qaeda-linked militants who have taken root in the vast ungoverned spaces of the Sahara and Sahel.

Few if any expect Obama, who burned his fingers in an early attempt to revive Israeli-Palestinian negotiations when Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu refused to stop Jewish settlement building, to launch a fresh peace initiative now.

Any risk of the United States being drawn into military intervention in the Islamic world after extricating itself from Iraq and winding down its presence in Afghanistan is anathema to the Obama administration, said Gideon Rose, editor of the policy journal Foreign Affairs.

ASIA PIVOT

Some delegates cited Obama's strategic "pivot" towards Asia, shifting Washington's focus towards the fast-growing economies of the Asia-Pacific region, as one reason why tensions were on the rise in the Middle East and North Africa.

The president's first foreign trip after his re-election in November to southeast Asia was overshadowed by a flare-up between Israel and the Palestinians in Gaza, a reminder of an issue on the back-burner that can explode at any time.

It came during a potentially dangerous phase in relations around east Asia between China and Japan, North Korea and its neighbors, and above all China and the United States.

Former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, a China expert, urged Obama to use his second term to take a major initiative to build a cooperative security relationship with China, partly to avert conflicts in the South China Sea. Rose doubted that the Obama administration would undertake anything so ambitious.

Wu Xinbo, dean of the School of International Studies at Fudan University in China, said Washington should start by ending aggressive air and sea patrolling off China's shores, which he said smacked of the "containment" of the former Soviet Union.

He voiced concern that Japan, driven by a more nationalist new government and public opinion, could pursue an "offensive" approach to a dispute over a group of small islands in the South China Sea known as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China.

Joseph Nye, a former U.S. official and Harvard academic who visited Japan and China recently as part of a semi-official U.S. delegation, said both countries were worried by the perceived growth of nationalism and militarism in the other although "this is not 1930s nationalism".

But Nye said both countries' new leaderships would give top priority to economic development and provided the United States sent careful messages to both, there was the prospect of a strong triangular relationship.

Gauge of business spending plans edges higher

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A gauge of business investment plans improved in December, a sign companies were betting the economy will pick up despite fears over tighter fiscal policy.

The Commerce Department said on Monday that non-defense capital goods orders excluding aircraft, a closely watched proxy for investment plans, edged up 0.2 percent last month.

Many economists expected businesses to invest more timidly late last year because of uncertainty over government spending cuts and tax increases, which had been scheduled to kick in this month. Congress ultimately struck a last-minute deal to avoid or postpone most of the austerity measures.

Despite the uncertainty, Monday's data pointed to growing economic momentum as companies sensed improved consumer demand.

"It certainly seems to us that companies are slowly but surely expanding," said Tim Ghriskey, chief investment officer at Solaris Group in Bedford Hills, New York.

In a further sign of business confidence, the November reading on capital spending plans was revised higher to show a 3 percent gain, up from the 2.6 percent rise reported a month ago.

A second report showed a measure of upcoming home resales took a breather in December, declining 4.3 percent. Still, the housing sector posted a rebound last year and economists expect it will add to growth again in 2013.

The business spending data pushed down prices for U.S. government debt, while giving the dollar a lift against the yen. But stock prices opened lower.

New orders for overall durable goods - long lasting factory goods from toasters to automobiles - jumped 4.6 percent in December, beating economists expectations of a 1.8 percent gain.

The gains were broad based, with orders for machinery, cars and primary metals all increasing.

"There's a lot more confidence," said Wayne Kaufman, an analyst at John Thomas Financial in New York.

Orders surged for civilian aircraft and military goods, although those two categories tend to be quite volatile.

Despite the stronger-than-expected demand at the nation's factories, economists think economic growth cooled in the fourth quarter as companies slowed the pace at which they re-stocked their shelves.

Analysts polled by Reuters expect a report on gross domestic product due on Wednesday will show the economy expanded at a mere 1.1 percent annual rate in the fourth quarter, down from a 3.1 percent rate in the previous three months.

However, Monday's report on new orders for long-lasting factory goods suggested businesses are feeling stronger demand from consumers, and are responding by buying more machines to meet that demand. TD Securities economist Millan Mulraine said capital investment likely added to economic growth in the fourth quarter.

27 die in Egypt riot after soccer violence verdict

CAIRO (AP) ? Angry relatives and residents rampaged through an Egyptian port city Saturday in rioting that killed at least 27 people after a judge sentenced nearly two dozen soccer fans to death for involvement in deadly violence after a game last year.

The unrest was the latest in a bout of violence that has left a total of 38 people dead in two days, including 11 killed in clashes between police and protesters marking Friday's second anniversary of the uprising that overthrew longtime leader Hosni Mubarak.

President Mohammed Morsi canceled a scheduled trip to Ethiopia Saturday and instead met for the first time with top generals as part of the newly formed National Defense Council.

The violence in Port Said erupted after a judge sentenced 21 people to death in connection with the Feb. 1 soccer melee that killed 74 fans of the Cairo-based Al-Ahly team. Executions in Egypt are usually carried out by hanging.

All the defendants ? who were not present in the courtroom Saturday for security reasons ? can appeal the verdict.

Judge Sobhi Abdel-Maguid did not give his reasoning when he read out the verdicts for 21 out of the 73 defendants Saturday. The verdict for the remaining 52 defendants, including nine security officials, is scheduled to be delivered March 9. Some have been charged with murder and others with assisting the attackers.

Die-hard soccer fans from both teams, known as Ultras, hold the police at least partially responsible for February's violence, which was the world's worst soccer violence in 15 years, saying officers at the game did nothing to stop the bloodshed. They also criticize Egypt's President Mohammed Morsi for doing little to reform the police force or the judiciary since he took office in July.

The opposition says Morsi, Egypt's first freely elected and civilian president, and his Muslim Brotherhood allies in government have failed to restore stability amid continued political turmoil and crime, and point to a worsening economy.

In a statement Saturday, the main opposition National Salvation Front said it holds Morsi responsible for "the excessive use of force by the security forces against protesters." They threatened to boycott upcoming parliamentary elections if Morsi does not meet their demands that include amending articles in the new constitution.

The Brotherhood said in its statement that "misleading" media outlets were to blame for "enflaming the people's hatred for the current regime and urging them to act violently."

Immediately after Saturday's verdict was read live on state TV, two policemen were shot dead outside Port Said's main prison when angry relatives tried to storm the facility to free the defendants. Police fired tear gas and rubber bullets, as well as live rounds, at the crowd outside the prison.

In other parts of the city, residents tried to storm the governor's office, police stations, the power station and the main court building. Residents occupied one police station in the east of Port Said.

The director of hospitals in Port Said, Dr. Abdel-Raham Farah, said two local soccer players were shot to death as they were apparently on their way to practice. He identified them as Mahmoud Abdel-Halim al-Dizawi, who played for the city's Al-Marikh club, and Tamer al-Fahla, who used to play for the city's main Al-Masry team. Al-Diwazi was shot three times, the doctor said.

The club they were training at is near the prison that residents tried to storm.

The military was deployed in Port Said to try to restore security, but assaults continued into the evening. The army was widely used to keep order by top generals who took over after Hosni Mubarak, but the military has kept a much lower profile since Morsi was elected.

Egyptian military forces also were sent into the canal city of Suez after eight people died in Friday's clashes between security forces and protesters opposed to the new president and the Brotherhood. Another protester was killed in Ismailiya, and security officials told the state news agency MENA that two policemen were killed in Friday's protests.

Many of the young men who led the protests and clashes hail from the Ultras. They often come from poor neighborhoods and view the police force that was the backbone of Mubarak's authoritarian rule as their nemesis.

"The police are thugs!" yelled relatives of the deceased inside the courtroom before the judge took the bench.

Near Cairo's Tahrir Square, where tens of thousands had amassed to mark the two-year anniversary a day earlier, Ultras Al-Ahly waved their team's red flag as they clashed with police who fired tear gas to disburse the crowd near Cabinet headquarters and Parliament.

Underlining the distrust that lingers between much of the public and the police, survivors and witnesses say Mubarak loyalists had a hand in instigating last year's attack, which began after Port Said's home team won the match, 3-1, and that the police at the very least were responsible for gross negligence.

Al-Masry fans stormed the pitch after the game ended, attacking Cairo's Al-Ahly fans. Authorities shut off the stadium lights, plunging it into darkness. In the exit corridor, the fleeing crowd pressed against a chained gate until it broke open. Many were crushed under the crowd of people trying to flee.

Other survivors said it was simply bloodthirsty Al-Masry fans and lack of enough security that led to the deaths of their colleagues. Both sides blame police for failing to perform usual searches for weapons at the stadium.

Anger is boiling in Port Said, where residents say they have been unfairly scapegoated.

A lawyer of one of the defendants given a death sentence said the verdict was political.

"There is nothing to say these people did anything and we don't understand what this verdict is based on," Mohammed al-Daw told The Associated Press by telephone.

"Our situation in Port Said is very grave because kids were taken from their homes for wearing green T-shirts," he said, referring to the Al-Masry team color.

Al-Daw and other defense attorneys said all those sentenced were Al-Masry fans. As is customary in Egypt, the death sentences will be sent to the nation's top religious authority, the Grand Mufti, for approval, though the court has final say on the matter.

Fans of Al-Ahly, whose stands were attacked by rival club Al-Masry in the incident in Port Said, had promised more violence in the days leading up to the verdict if the death penalty was not handed down.

Before the judge could read out the names of the 21, families erupted in relief, yelling "Allahu Akbar!" Arabic for "God is great," with their hands in the air and waving pictures of the deceased. One man fainted while others hugged one another. The judge smacked the bench several times to try to restore calm in the courtroom.

"This was necessary," said Nour al-Sabah, whose 17-year-old son Ahmed Zakaria died in last year's melee. "Now I want to see the guys when they are executed with my own eyes, just as they saw the murder of my son."

Thousands of Al-Ahly fans gathered outside the Cairo sports club for the verdict, chanting against the police and the government.

"We are not really that happy," Mohamed Ahmed, a survivor of the attack, said. "The government helped the Ultras of Port Said by blocking the gates of the stadium until people suffocated to death.

Engineers 'evolve' super-efficient solar cell

2 hrs.

Scientists are using principles of natural selection to evolve a more efficient solar cell.

Engineers at Northwestern University wrote a computer program that "mates" design elements and assesses the fitness of their "offspring" to come up with the most efficient possible organic solar cell. Organic solar cells are made with the so-called organic elements ? carbon, oxygen and nitrogen ? and are cheaper to make, lighter and more flexible than the traditional silicon cells available in solar panels today.

Organic cells aren't as efficient at turning the sun's energy into electricity as silicon cells, however. Many research groups are working to improve organic solar cells' efficiency. If they work well, such cells could go into? electricity-producing windows ?or clothes.

In their work, the Northwestern researchers focused on the top layer of an organic solar cell, called the scattering layer, which traps photons from sunlight. They wanted a scattering layer that would hold photos for a greater amount of time.

"We wanted to determine the geometry for the scattering layer that would give us optimal performance," Cheng Sun, a mechanical engineer and one of the creators of the new organic solar cell,? said in a statement. "But with so many possibilities, it's difficult to know where to start, so we looked to laws of natural selection to guide us."

Sun and his colleagues' program simulated more than 20 generations of matings to come up with their final design. The program also mimicked the biological processes of mutation and an exchange of traits called crossing over.

The resulting design traps photons for three times as long as the Yablonovitch Limit, which describes how long a photon is likely to stay in a semiconducting material. Researchers have only been able to reach and break the Yablonovitch Limit in the last few years.?

The engineers? published their work ?Jan. 3 in the journal Scientific Reports.

Clean, refreshing, pure spirits at Dillon's Small ... - Wines In Niagara

DSC05822

By Michael Lowe

The cold of winter may be upon us, but here?s a way to warm up and lift your spirits at the same time.

Dillon?s Small Batch Distillers, located in Beamsville, has been creating quite a buzz on Twitter and Facebook since they opened last December. No wonder ? Distiller Geoff Dillon is creating some amazingly pure, clean, and tasty spirits. The heart of the distillery is a bank of shiny new pot and column stills that were custom made in Germany.

CIMG9885

Dillons Still Plates_1

Dillon?s father, Peter, has spent a good portion of his life experimenting with herbs and botanicals. As such, he is the man behind the flavours you will find in their intriguing, unique gin. Unlike the traditional London Dry style, which relies heavily on juniper berries for its flavour profile, Dillon?s is? refreshingly different.

The juniper takes a bit of back seat here, allowing the delicate aromas of the 22 botanicals used in the unfiltered distillate to shine. The nose presents more citrus, spice and star anise, with orange peel and the anise lingering on the palate.

DSC05823

Dillon?s ?Method 95? vodka

Here?s a recipe I concocted based on the classic ?Vesper? martini popularized in the James Bond film Casino Royale

Let?s ?Bond? Martini
2 Parts Dillon?s Gin
2 Parts Dillon?s Method 95 [Vodka]
1/2- 3/4 Part Dry Vermouth
2 Drops of Dillon?s Bitter Lemon
Shake with ice, strain into cocktail glass
Garnish with twist of lemon and orange

DSC05865

Dillon?s White Rye and the ?Niagarita?

Dillon?s White Rye is one of my favourites of the current product portfolio. Now, I?m no bartender but this rye presents endless possibilities in the art of mixology. As expected, rye grain aromas dominate the nose supported by delicate spiciness. The whisky is at first slightly sweet on the palate, full and round in texture, followed by a peppery finish. I couldn?t help but try switching it for tequila in another classic drink. The result? something I?m calling the Niagarita.

The Niagarita

3 Parts Dillon?s White Rye
1 Part Triple Sec (or other orange liqueur)
5 Drops Dillon?s Bitter Lime
Juice of 1/2 lime
Shake with ice, strain into cocktail glass rimmed with a mixture of 1/2 salt, 1/2 sugar & lime zest.

If you haven?t been to Dillon?s Small Batch Distillery yet, I encourage you to stop by. Swirl, sniff, sip and savour the spirits with an open mind and let these refreshing new products inspire the bartender in you.

Cheers!

Pentagon: Budget crisis could hurt war effort

The Afghan war effort eventually would be harmed by across-the-board budget cuts, even as the Obama administration intends to shield the military's combat mission from the reductions, Carter said Friday, Jan. 25, 2012. (AP) ? The Afghan war effort eventually would be harmed by across-the-board budget cuts, even as the Obama administration intends to shield the military's combat mission from the reductions, the Pentagon's No. 2 official said Friday.

"There will be second-order effects on the war," Ashton Carter, the deputy defense secretary, said in an interview in his office with a small group of reporters. Deferred maintenance on weapons and other equipment, for example, will eventually erode the combat fitness of military units deploying to Afghanistan, he said.

The U.S. has about 66,000 troops in Afghanistan, with an undetermined number of withdrawals expected this year and in 2014.

The administration holds out hope that Congress will come up with a deficit-cutting mechanism to replace the across-the-board spending cuts due to take effect March 1, but Carter suggested that hopes are not high.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, have repeatedly warned that the threatened defense cuts, amounting to about $50 billion this budget year, would hurt national security. Carter said he feared that the message has not been heard widely enough in Congress and across the country.

If the cuts take effect in March, hundreds of thousands of Pentagon civilian employees will face furloughs and reduced paychecks by April, Carter said. They would lose one day of work per week for the remainder of the budget year, which ends in September, he said.

"This is painful to us," Carter said.

The Pentagon has about 800,000 civilian employees; they have not yet been officially notified of furloughs. Carter said the furloughs would be expected to save $5 billion. No military positions will be cut, he said.

Carter said the Pentagon already is eliminating all 46,000 of its temporary civilian workers in anticipation of budget cuts.

Carter also disclosed that he will remain on the job as deputy defense secretary in President Barack Obama's second term. He said Obama had called him after nominating Chuck Hagel to be his next defense secretary, asking Carter to remain.

"I agreed to do that, and I'm enthusiastic about doing that," he said, adding that he believes Hagel will be a good Pentagon chief.

Carter had been mentioned as a possible Obama choice for energy secretary.

2nd Most Expensive Home Sale in U.S.? Silicon ... - AOL Real Estate

2nd most expensive home sale: this mansion in Woodside, Calif.

Our eyes nearly popped out of our heads when we saw the reported sale price of this Woodside, Calif., mega-mansion: $117.5 million! If it's true, it would be the second most expensive home sale ever in the United States. (Billionaire Stanley Kroenke holds the No. 1 spot for his $132.5 million purchase of a Montana ranch last November.)

Bay Area blog SF Luxe came across the shocking discovery, pointing to public records on listings site Redfin showing the astronomical sale price of the 8,930-square-foot home in the middle of Silicon Valley. Our buddies at Curbed, though, expressed a bit of skepticism, saying: "It could also be a fat finger error at the property records office." We can't be totally certain, but there is some evidence that the sale price may be the real deal. A historic Colonial in Woodside went on the market for $85 million last September, and Russian billionaire Yuri Milner coughed up $100 million for a home in nearby Los Altos Hills, Calif.

The mega-mansion, previously owned by private equity bigwig Tully Friedman and designed by starchitect Allan Greenberg, was not publicly listed for sale, according to SF Luxe. The blog did not reveal the buyer, but said that "it's a name with which you are undoubtedly familiar." (Mark Zuckerberg?) The stunning neoclassical home, which sits on nine acres, has 360-degree mountain views.

Oops! Twitter's new video-sharing service lacks privacy settings

4 hrs.

Twitter's new video-sharing service Vine?feels a lot like Instagram for videos. It's neat, easy to use, and can produce fun clips. Just?one problem: There are no privacy settings whatsoever.

Right now, you can create and share Vine?videos using an iOS app?only. All you have to do is point your iPhone (or iPod Touch) at something and press your finger to the screen to record a clip up to six seconds in length (both sound and motion are captured, of course). Once satisfied with your final product, you can share it to Vine, Twitter and Facebook.?

Unfortunately as soon as you post?the clip to Vine, you've lost any control over who views it or interacts with it. There's no way to create a private Vine account nor can you choose who may follow you or view your profile on the video-sharing service. And while you can delete comments from your Vine posts, there's no way to block or report abusive users. (Though you can report videos as inappropriate.)

NBC News asked Twitter about the lack of privacy settings on Vine, and we were?pointed to the service's Help site, which confirms what we've experienced. ?"Profiles and videos on Vine are public, and anyone on the service can view them," a note declares before clarifying that?you can certainly?use Vine to create a video and save it to your Camera Roll rather than sharing it.?But this?isn't enough to?satisfy our need for actual privacy controls. We're instead left with the promise that the team?behind the service will "add more ways for you to control the visibility of your content in a future version of Vine."?

Positive Attitude As A Way Of Life - wise self improvement

The answer is not really specific. But it has been proven that people can sense the basic mental state of their peers.

Now, suppose you arrive at a party where a lot of your friends are present? What is your usual perception: they suddenly hush up in an apparent gloom? Or do you get the feeling of excitement and welcoming?

You might have realized now that these answers are entirely dependent on your perspective and chain of thought.

Thoughts are an influential tool. They define your attitude and appearance. This might not be applicable if you are adept at acting.

However, this attitude stemming from your thoughts has ability to cause an effect upon your peers.

Whether your attitude is positive or negative is entirely dependent on you.

Positivity is uplifting and refreshing. They make you feel full and similarly affect the people that surround you, making them happy and enthusiastic too.

Negativity is, however, deteriorating. It drains your energy and causes depression and, of course, spreads similar effects.

Where positive outlook charms people, negativity keeps them at bay. Positive people are the life of any party, and negative people can be real killjoys.

Attitude is, partly, your perception of the world. They say life is like a mirror. So if you look at the world with negativity, that's what your life is going to be full of as you are possessing a negative attitude. Choosing to focus on the silver lining, however, can bring a lot of good your way since your outlook is positive.

Positivity is beneficial for health too. It equips you with better stress handling ability and less problems come your way too. You also tend to have many friends.
It enables you to create a respectful image of yourself. Being able to accept and love yourself, you tend to be more content, happy and confident. And you spread that feeling around you.

Negativity is, obviously, the other end of the pole, so it creates brings about events exactly opposite to that when possessing positivity. Not only do you put yourself down in your own eyes, you spread that distasteful feeling to others.

It is important that you have a healthy outlook in life if you want to cultivate a positive attitude towards life. It can be quite difficult as we hear and see mostly negativity in the world today. It was shown in a study that a parent spoke only one positive thing per fourteen times in a conversation. This is something that is truly depressing.

However, you can change this by choosing to filter what you hear and only take in the positive news. Some of the easiest ways would be to watch a comedy movie or TV show, play with kids, joke and hold light repartee with your friends and family, exercise, indulge in a positive activity.

It is not feasible to see all the positivity without coming in contact with the other side of the coin. But it is a personal choice to embrace positivity.

This positivity will spread on its own. When things appear gloomy, people often need someone to listen and be supportive instead of giving advice. With positivity, however, you could make them feel better by just being around them!

Even though positivity is so beneficial, why are some people still so negative? This may be a sign for help. Such people may need support and attention. I'm not saying that it's unacceptable to be sad or angry. My point is that brooding over these negative thoughts can be harmful. One cannot mope forever.

The best thing to do, even when things seem bleak and dreadful, is to look at the silver lining. Reminding yourself of all the good things that have come your way can often lighten up the mood. You have to accept that problems and failures always teach you a lesson. There's no harm in developing a positive attitude. Positive outlook slows down aging and has many health benefits too. You spread the positivity and accompanying happiness. Try and adopt a positive attitude towards life. Starting today!

SKorea's economy rose 0.4 percent in final quarter

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? South Korea's economy picked up speed slightly in the final quarter of 2012 but fell short of forecasts, as a persisting dip in capital investment and lower export tempered growth.

Bank of Korea said Thursday that South Korea's economy expanded 0.4 percent from the previous quarter in the three months ending in December, falling short of the bank's October forecast of 0.8 percent growth.

The advanced estimate was a moderate improvement from the third quarter's 0.1 percent growth, the slowest pace in more than three years. Over a year earlier, the economy grew 1.5 percent, the same pace in the previous quarter.

For full-year 2012, Asia's fourth-largest economy grew 2 percent over 2011, the weakest annual performance in three years.

The slow annual growth was attributed to a drop in corporate investment and weak growth in exports, which offset the government's increased public construction projects and welfare spending. The government spending added 0.6 percentage points to the 2012 annual growth, according to the central bank.

The bank said an improvement in the fourth-quarter growth was due to the smaller decline in capital investment and a modest rise in consumer spending.

But the fragile recovery means it is too early to say the economy hit the bottom in the third quarter, said Bank of Korea director-general Kim Young-bae.

South Korea's economy is forecast to expand 2.8 percent in 2013, Bank of Korea said on Jan. 11, revising down its October forecast of 3.2 percent citing the uncertain overseas demand.

Despite grim outlook of the economy, Bank of Korea kept the key policy rate steady at 2.75 percent for a third month in January.

The government of Park Geun-hye, the president elect who is taking office in February, is planning to spend about 70 percent of the government's annual budget during the first half of this year to aid the recovery.

You'll want to check out the official RPG Rules by clicking "Our Rules" at the top of the page. That way you'll get a sense of the standards we hold ourselves to here. From there, feel free to post around the Community section of the site to get to know folks, drop by our chat, or even browse some roleplays!

If you have any further questions about anything at all, please don't hesitate to ask!
